This name  of the Himalayan state of Sikkim goes

 parallel with the name of the  Sikkim Mandarin Orange 'SUNTOLA' in local Nepali  language from time immemorial. It is evident from the facts that name of many village in Sikkim are named as 'Suntale' after the name of Suntala the Orange. Even the adjustant district of Darjelling, West Bengal also has village named after this fruits like 'Suntalekhola' a popular tourist village.  Sikkim is identified for its Orange and cardamom though cardamom production right now is declined due to diseases in the plant. Its production is fully natural and organic. The Himalayas of Sikkim are the abode of pure organic orange till date. My childhood memory of this hills is filled with fragrances of tiny white flower of orange spread  all around our orange  orchard,  our home surrounding, even our footpath and village trail were perfumery and scented by the blossom of orange bushes. It is filled with story shared by my mama, the story of porters, contractors and suppliers visiting our  village during its harvesting season in winter. My grandpapa was also a contractor and suppliers of orange. My mama told me that he used to pay  advances  for coming three consecutive years production. He used to identified as 'Suntale' before his title Dawadi thus 'Suntale Dawadi'. Visiting homestay during January and febreury months of year particularly in South and West Sikkim goes with mind blowing impression of this himalayan state. 

 These days Mandarin orange covered the cultivated area of almost 6000 hectares. It annual  production vary from 16000 to 18000 tones per year. 

Orange the Native Fruits of Sikkim

Orange is native fruit grown in Sikkim since time immemorial though it is believed to be originated from China. Its production is also popular in peripheral state of Sikkim including Darjelling, Bhutan and Nepal. It is grown and best suited  usually from the elevation of 550 meter to 1400 meter from the sea level. Early traders from Indian mainland entered this state particularly focusing the business of orange and cardamom of Sikkim. Market of the Sikkim mandarin orange extended from its local market to the Silliguri, Malda, and Kolkata of the West Bengal. Sikkim Supreme, at Singtam, Chisopani , a Government of Sikkim venture is very popular for production of world class orange juice. This food preservation unit of government is very helpful in providing market support to local farmers for selling their produced.
