Being surrounded by hills all around, our
horizon is our limits and inspiration where the mountains and peaks stood in front of us as a challenges of life. Those were the days we had no good road networks, no modern facilities, no good income to enjoy the life. The people were mostly engaged in agricultural activities, the eroded Himalayas had hardly the fertility to feed our society sufficiently. No modern agricultural facilities and in some parts is still the rule of the day. We the tiny toddler had no knowledge of the world outside. Hardly any television in the village . No electricity. Playing with our small heard of cows and goats , top to down jumping in a zebra cross terraced field competing each other, whistling in the jungle were our schedule holidays activity especially during winter. We had at least access to community school, build by community contribution of grass bamboo and labour. We use to clean the floor of our school using cow dung, use to take take from home some wooden tools sometimes straw mate, a substitute of modern day chair and bench in school. We started to Learn ABCD of life . Singing some rhymes.. humpty dumpty sat on a wall , London bridge , baa ba black sheep , started to change the landscape of our psychology though we had no amenities or other learning tools. Searching for the joy of life in Himalayas
Searching for joy to fill life, little romance and entertainment we learned to accompany our cowboys who use to tamed their animal at forest and at the top of the mountain. We learned hiking . Short trek to the top of the mountain .. The edge of the mountain, rivers and streams flowing from the valley, the drain and ditches of the Himalayas astonished us. We grew little more. We are built out of the rough, tough and fascinating struggle for survival under the acute pressure of scarcity. Scarcity of life supporting amenities from water, food, clothes, medicine to good shelters. No electricity at least in villages in the Himalayas. No medical facilities at the nearest and approachable place.
Days passed, months passed and likely the years. I understood the order of the day and process of the growing civilization, why we are unique, why unique practices, unique art , architecture, culture and lifestyle. It was the time we had stone mill at home for grinding our grain, wooden mill to dehusk the rice, red and white mud to colour our house, bamboo and grass to build our house. No cement, no galvanized steel sheet for the roof. millet, buckwheat, jawahar, potato, squash, maize, and ground vegetables were our prominent part of the meal. We were landlocked. We had everything for us to continue our generation at least to the extent that we had no access to other world. Our lifestyle was actually the direct reflection of our material condition and survival at the edge of life. One important aspect of the social psychology was that we use to eat, we use to celebrate, use to sing, use to dance, use to build the structure, but with no such consciousness that we are performing our culture. It was just a way of life, our conditions where our material background precede and guide our way, our psychology. For us every things we performed was order of the day. Pappa use to treat our diseases and health elements with herbs and some prayer and hymns. That was our last option. Ranging from fever to pox diarrhea to dysentery all we had is our doctor our papa or grandpa or mama or grandma under the same roof or from our neighborhood. Oh great! They save their generation, we are still here to continue. The legacy is live . No issue of identity, no issue of cultural crises no voice to save it. No our and nothing to contradict with their. It was all very simple.
entering in to the New era of modernization
With the growth of modern economy, polity and globalization, old things slowly diluted for the new comfort of new era. Now came the question of identity, contradiction, how to identify, where to identify, with whom to identify ourselves. We entered the era of antagonism, contradiction and confusion.
Culture its a big question here.. ????.. I wonder, what is tradition ? What is cultural history and what is culture or else something in the name of culture, the practices carried in scarcity where life was in the edge of survival. And more big question is what to carryforward from our past??
Shall we identified our culture as the suffering we had in our past which has already lost its relevancy and had nothing to with our present life. It has no influence at all at present. A stone grinder replaced by moter grinder , a wooden mill substituted by electric mill, wooden hearth substituted by gas stove and induction if could be our culture, some times I wonder why those days we used to wonder in forest and life of forest wonderer be our identity and uniqueness. Why we stop in the middle of no where and try to established our uniqueness? Why not to identified going back and back or why not to identified with what we are at present?
The end note
Culture cannot be identified with the curse of scarcity. To identified some practices or achievement of a community as its culture, it should be a finest expression of the social personality of a community, the fine art developed over a years and years. It is an antique and almost a refined expression of art, music or an architecture. It is a pride of a particular community, a tangible or intangible social assets which really identified with particular community. It is a value addition carryforward since time immemorial.
