Housing Architecture from traditional to modern: a shifting trend
to In its recent venture CTDS studied the trend of development of rural housing architecture from a century before. The study attempt to identified and established the shifting trend in rural housing architecture, try to discover underlying causes of the shifting trend, observation of the whole historical trend of development of rural housing architecture in its fundamental research work titled “houses through ages” with an objective to develop a conceptual rural tourism product in the name and styled of houses through ages itself. The research work is to connect cultural tourism with conservation of traditional knowledge of housing architecture which is in the verse of dying these days by assimilating its cultural, aesthetic and other progressive aspect with modern housing architecture and engineering.
Discovering traditional housing architecture through participatory appraisal:
With the help of Mr. Benith Song, an architect cum a Guest Scholar from World Learning Centre, Jaipur, originally belongs to California , USA, CTDS conducted the study of the shifting trend and the underlying causes of the trend shift, discovered the progressive values hidden in the century long village housing architecture, advantages therein and also sought out the disadvantages carried by it . At the end, CTDS conducted three days long rural participatory workshop involving general villagers, local carpenters and youths wherein the rural participatory workshop exercised to prepare a technical blue print of a modern dwelling house which fundamentally cover traditional aesthetic aspect of cultural houses and at the same time remains cost effective, economically vibrant, sustainable, earth quake proof and shall be made out of locally available materials at its maximum possibilities. The additional features cover technical design of room and annexed toilet bathroom considering the need of modern dwelling house which can suitably be used for rural tourism and home stay purpose also. The final blue print is for social use and can be used by any member of the society for construction of their new dwelling houses. This very work serves the purpose of those poor village people who usually cannot involve architect to prepare blue print of their house to be constructed.
A new face of rural tourism in Himalayas
The very attempt of CTDS proved that tourism is not a mere economic activity if taken judiciously. Ecotourism can be living practices which helps in enrichment and enhancement of the intellectual, spiritual and cultural values of society along with that of guest people through realization of self values and intrinsic beauty in the process of interaction and exchange of ideas. Such kind of tourism ventures can give liveliness to village inheritances its conservation and live support to the people to people of Himalayas.
