Planting and Harvesting: 

Rice is the major kharif  crop of Sikkim. It is planted specially during the month of July and August and harvested during October and November. A picturesque view of golden paddy field is available during the months of  October and November. The planting day of rice is called as "ropaie" in Sikkim and people have very fun on this day. Agriculture enthusiast and nature lover may visit the state during this season for experiencing ropaie and breathtaking view of the golden field of organic rice in this  Himalayan state.   

Vanishing Golden Valley and need of conservation:

With the passing of time and emergence of industrial culture, people got no time for planting and working on field as it turns to be a fellow land. shifting of labour from primary to secondary sector is responsible for decrease and disappearance of  rice cultivation in Sikkim. Retention of the cultivable field is most important in respect to the food security of the state, to promote organic agriculture, and to attract large numbers of Agro-tourist in the state of Sikkim.  Apart from the tourist attraction, Himalayan people sustain their lives depending on rice plantation. The growing of industries, factories and roads has decreased the farming land and has become one of the major concern for conserving the activity of rice plantation. So, it is now the concern major to conserve the activity of rice plantation. To keep this heritage alive, focus of conservation activist and government support to local farmer is most. As per the report published Food Security & Agriculture Department, Government of Sikkim the cultivable are of rice in Sikkim was 14.74 thousand  hectares in the year 2003-2004 and has reduced to 9.50 hectares in the 2017-2018 whereas the production reduced form 21.19 thousand tones to 17.64 thousand tones in the 2017-2018

Rice Valley the historical assets of Sikkim:

The Himalayan state of Sikkim is endowed by rich forest, rivers and stream and crowned by mighty Mount Kanchenjunga . The valley has rich potential of growing rare species of paddy even being a hilly terrain. Villages in Himalayan region still have lands which can be utilize for planting rice, if people got some more recourses and support from the government so that even villages can be developed.
